Why Does My Dog Stay Close When I Sleep? Bobo Explains

Bobo & Mommy ·

You're drifting off to sleep, and then you feel it: a warm little weight settling in right against your side. Your dog has, once again, decided that the safest place in the whole world is exactly where you are.

So we did what we always do. We asked Bobo about it directly.

Bobo's answer

Bobo, why do you sit so close when Mommy is sleeping? I am checking.

Checking what? Sometimes Mommy gets very quiet. Her eyes close. Her hand stops petting me.

And what do you do? I do my little check. I put my paw close. Not on her face. (Mommy said no face paws. Hihihi.)

And when you know she's okay? Then I sleep too. Right next to her. Because if she wakes up a little sad, I want to be the first sparkly face she sees.

We were not emotionally prepared for that last one either.

So what's really going on?

Bobo's version is adorable, and honestly, it isn't far off. Here's what's behind that need to stay close:

  • Dogs are pack animals. Sleeping in a pile is how they feel safe. To your dog, you are the pack, so your side is the comfiest, safest spot there is.
  • It's a bonding thing. Curling up together releases feel-good chemistry for both of you. That cozy, calm feeling is real, and it goes both ways.
  • A little bit of guard duty. Some dogs really are "checking," staying near while you're at your most relaxed, just keeping a soft eye on their favorite human.

So the next time your pup glues themselves to you at bedtime, take it as the compliment it is. You're their whole world.
