Can Dogs Smile? Bobo Explains
Bobo & Mommy ·
You know the look. The soft eyes, the open mouth, the tail going so fast it could lift off. It sure looks like a smile. But is it? We went straight to the expert.
Bobo's answer
Bobo, people say dogs don't really smile. Is that true? Um... I think they're wrong. I think I can smile.
You do? Yes, but not like humans.
How? Humans smile with just their face. Bobo smiles with everything.
Everything? Yes. It starts in my heart, sparkly sparkly. Then my eyes get soft. Then my tail goes helicopter mode.
So that's a smile? I think it is my puppy smile. Not a human smile. A Bobo smile.
What makes you smile the most? My Mommy. When she looks at me. When she says good boy. When she gets me ready for a walk. Best part of the week.
Helicopter mode. We're keeping that one.
So can dogs really smile?
Bobo's "whole body" theory is closer to the truth than you'd think:
- The "smile" is real, just different. That relaxed open mouth and soft face is a genuine sign of a happy, calm dog. They're not faking it for the camera.
- They smile with their body. A loose wiggly posture and a big sweeping tail are how dogs show joy. Bobo's helicopter tail is the real giveaway.
- They learn it works on us. Dogs notice that happy faces get happy reactions from their humans, so many learn to "smile" right back at us.
So the next time your dog flashes that goofy grin, trust it. That's a happy heart in helicopter mode.
